The Waterford Institute of Technology is one of the largest institutes of technology in Ireland. It was established as a Regional Technical College in 1970, and was the first to receive the status of Institute of Technology in 1998. During the period of this process, and as a result of an international quality review, the Institute received authority delegated by the National Council. of Educational Awards to confer their own Certificates and Diplomas.

The Institute now awards its own awards at all levels, from Higher Certificate to Ph.D., subject to standards established and supervised by the Board of Education Awards and Higher Training (HETAC), which was established by the Government in June 2001, under the) Act, 1999. The quality and standard of Irish educational awards are fully recognized worldwide. All Irish awards are included in the national qualifications framework maintained by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland, http: //www.nqai.ie.

Waterford Institute of Technology has the largest number of students within the Institute of Technology sector, outside of Dublin, participating at the ordinary and above grade level. The Institute also offers unique postdoctoral programs in a number of specialized areas.

As the leading provider of higher education in the South East region of Ireland, the Institute’s current cohort of full-time equivalent students exceeds 7,500, while the enrollment of students at part time exceeds 2,500. The range of academic programs is exceptionally extensive and covers the areas of Humanities, Health and Nursing, Science and Informatics, Engineering and Architecture, Business and Education.

Research and innovation

Over the past 10 years, the Institute has successfully attracted more than € 139 million in research funding from various sources. WIT researchers have obtained funding from the Research Program in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) cycles 3, 4 and 5; Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Frontiers Program and Principal Investigator Program, and various European funding programs, including eTEN and InterReg. In addition, there are three Enterprise Ireland (EI) funded Technology Gateway Centers in the areas of applied materials research, telecommunications research, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology research. WIT has an established track record of success in the various European Framework Programs (FP), having obtained funding in FP4, FP5, FP6, FP7 and most recently in Horizon 2020 (H2020).

International and industry links

WIT has formal academic exchange and research partnerships with more than 40 universities around the world. These range from the ancient univeEstablished rsities such as Oxford, Trinity College Dublin and University College London to newer technological universities such as the Budapest University of Technology and Nanjing University of Science and Technology. In addition, WIT has very close relationships with industry and commerce, the professions and the public service of research, consulting, student and graduate internships, etc. A culture of entrepreneurship and innovation is fostered at all levels of the organization. This can be illustrated by the one-year business platform program offered to graduates by the School of Business. Through its School of Humanities, it plays a very important role in the social and cultural life of its region.

Our structure

The management and governance structures of the Institute include the Governing Body, which consists of regional and institutional stakeholders, the Academic Council, responsible for the academic quality of the Institute, and the statutory functions of individual key personnel, such as the President. The senior management team, the Executive Board, is composed of the President (President), the Secretary, the Secretary / Financial Controller and all the directors of academic schools
