The modern medicine program has resulted in the development of a wide range of novel engineering solutions for clinical problems. Examples of these developments range from orthopedic implants like total hip replacements to cardiovascular implants like coronary stents (small wire frames inserted into the blood vessels around the heart). As a result of increased collaboration between engineers and physicians, the new discipline of Biomedical Engineering was developed. Biomedical engineering is the fastest growing area of engineering.
