Civil engineering is about protecting, creating and enhancing our everyday environment. It is about the planning, design and construction of the facilities that we require for housing, industry and transportation. Roads, bridges, ports, buildings, railways, airports, water supply, drainage, sewage treatment systems, dams, flood management and sustainable energy schemes such as wind farms, ocean power or hydroelectric plants. Infrastructure on which civilization depends to function now and in the future.

Program description

Civil engineers manage and design projects of all scales, from individual houses to multi-story buildings, from group water schemes to major bridges and roads. They work as individuals and as part of teams. Civil engineering is about protecting, creating, and enhancing our everyday environment. This program is designed to help students identify and develop their skills in problem solving, design, and management. We work with our students to develop their strengths and abilities to enter the workplace with the professional skills to be successful in whatever direction their careers take them.

Business placement

There are internships in the third year of the program. Having completed the exams in May, students are placed in engineering firms, in most cases, for three months. It is a core element of the program where students build on their professional skills and begin to build professional networks.

Career options

Graduates can work in the structural, water, public health, renewable, transportation, and geotechnical branches of the civil engineering industry.

In addition to developing knowledge in structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering, the program will develop management skills and employability for employment in the private industry or public service sector.

This course places an emphasis on broader civil engineering design and development, allowing students to focus on their specific interests during the senior year.

Program options

Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree with honors in civil engineering can progress to level 9 (master) or level 10 (doctorate) research studies here at DkIT or other third-level institutions. Within DkIT, students can gain access to the Master of Renewable Energy or the suite of Structured Master programs offered by the School of Engineering.
