The Master of Human Anatomy is a 12-month full-time program that is uniquely designed to provide advanced training in clinically applied human anatomy. While different pedagogies are used as part of this program, cadaveric dissection is a crucial component of the course located in the state-of-the-art FLAME laboratory.

The program is designed to reinforce and promote the anatomical knowledge and dissection skills of the participants. The core modules will cover different anatomical sciences such as gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and human embryology. Elective modules are designed to suit students with different interests. Students taking the anatomy pedagogy module will be taught to develop and offer innovative anatomical teaching methods that include the use of new technologies.

Program Structure

Central modules:

  • Gross Human Anatomy 1 (15 credits)
  • Human embryology (5 credits)

Pedagogy of Anatomy (10 credits)

Central modules:

  • Human Gross Anatomy II (15 credits)
  • Neuroanatomy (10 credits)
  • Radiological images (5 credits)
  • Research thesis (30 credits)

* The optional modules will be executed based on the fulfillment of the minimum number of students requirement.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop radiological skills and experience in the Radiological Imaging module. In addition to the theoretical knowledge learned, participants will have access to practical experience in a variety of radiological modalities, for example, CT, MRI, ultrasound and PET. Students do not need previous experience in these types of images.

Course practices

This program is full-time for three semesters. Students should expect to attend a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and labs from 9 am to 5 pm each day, with some time devoted to independent learning, during semesters 1 and 2. In each semester, students will attend from 5 to 8 hours of lectures, 2-3 hours of tutorials, 6-9 hours of labs and 1-2 hours of seminars per week. During the third semester, students will complete a short research proposal and complete a limited-scope research project.

The assessment of this course is designed keeping in mind that participants will have different learning styles. Therefore, the goal is to incorporate assessment techniques and methods that complement our teaching style and the varied preferences of the participants, in addition to enhancing learning. The modules will be assessed using a combination of continuous assessment and written examinations. Ongoing assessments will include essays, oral presentations, and website creation. While the summative exams will include practical exams and written exams.

The academic staff of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience will teach in this course. This will include people who are experts in the areas of human anatomy, embryology, radiology, neuroanatomy, as well as people with experience in cadaver dissection and processing.

Why choose this course

This is the first master’s degree in human anatomy to be taught in the Republic of Ireland. It has a large cadaver-based dissection component that will provide participants with a unique and exceptional opportunity to develop their dissection and anatomical knowledge of human material. It will be based at the FLAME Laboratory, the department’s newly built state-of-the-art human anatomy research facility. Students will develop and offer innovative teaching methods, receive hands-on experience in radiological modalities, design and implement an independent research project related to anatomy. The variety of assessment methods experienced in this course will provide students with skills they can employ in future careers.

Career opportunities

The Master of Human Anatomy will enhance the application profile of graduates advancing in their career paths. Graduates will be equipped with skills that enable them to excel in careers in anatomical sciences, including teaching and technical positions. Applications from medical graduates seeking positions in clinical schemes will be reinforced by the advanced skills and knowledge gained in this course.

Occupations associated with a Master of Human Anatomy.

The occupations of graduates with a Master of Human Anatomy will pursue a career within academic / health-related settings as a medical demonstrator, instructor, teaching partner, prosector, technician. Additionally, laboratory careers in the medical device industry, as well as medical illustrator, are also potential occupations. This master’s degree is also suitable for those in medical or surgical fields to advance their career, as well as provide opportunities for those who have completed a relevant bachelor’s degree.

Admission Requirements

  • Candidates will be required to possess a minimum of Second Honors Degree II in a primary honors degree (NFQ, Level 8) or equivalent in a subject related to that of the master’s program such as (but not exclusively) healthcare, nursing, biomedical, bioengineering, pre-medicine or any biological science; OR Have a medical qualification from NUI or an equivalent institution, and have a full professional registration with the Medical Council of Ireland or an equivalent national regulatory body.
  • Applications from registered nurses who completed their training prior to the introduction of honors nursing degree programs will also be considered. Such candidates must have a full professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or equivalent.
  • In exceptional circumstances, applicants with a second class II honors degree in a primary honors degree (NFQ, level 8) or equivalent, in a subject unrelated to the master’s degree, may be recommended for admission to the program under the recognition of prior learning (RPL). ), subject to the approval of the Program Committee.

English requirements
