This innovative evidence-based inter-teaching program is an opportunity for honors graduates to pursue studies that will lead them to become competent nutritionists and dietitians working in a wide range of settings. They include clinical, community and public health settings, hospital and private practices, food service management and the food industry.

Program description

Students will carry out modules shared with other health disciplines at the Escuela de Salud Aliada through an interprofessional education model, so they will be exposed from the beginning to an approach integrated multidisciplinary team for health care.

In addition to the academic modules at UL, students in the Master of Human Nutrition and Dietetics program will complete 1000 hours of clinical and community placement over two years, including a period of summer study. The clinical placement modules will be conducted in a variety of settings (tertiary and secondary hospitals, primary care, public health, and food service establishments) and with patients of all ages. Locations may be based outside of Limerick.

The Master of Nutrition and Dietetics aims to develop graduates who are capable of:

  • Establish therapeutic relationships with diverse populations by optimizing the nutrition of communities and individuals, in a variety of settings. < / span>
  • Critique and apply the evidence for the evaluation, diagnosis and nutritional management of the patient. </ li>
  • Be competent in the prescription, administration and follow-up of nutritional and dietary interventions, based on an evidence-based approach and clinically reasoned for the effective treatment of people with a variety of conditions.
  • Employ the principles of client-centered practice.
  • Collaborate with clients, colleagues, and communities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Use an innovative and creative approach to meet evolving service developments and healthcare needs. </ span >
  • Conduct research and evaluate the scientific literature to inform an evidence-based approach to research and practice.
  • Integrate the ethical, social and cultural dimensions of healthcare within clinical judgment. </ li >

Program results

After completing the master’s program, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the application of specialized knowledge in accordance with the required dietary competencies as established by the Registration Board of CORU dietitians.
  • Understand the associations between nutrition, health and disease to allow integration and application to the practice of dietetics. </ span>
  • Use an evidence-based framework to provide practical and holistic solutions to a variety of complex and changing nutritional and dietary problems in a variety of environments.
  • Apply critical thinking in the assessment and dietary management of individuals, groups and communities. </ li >
  • To exercise a professional and ethical dietary practice for individuals, groups and communities of diverse social and cultural origins and in different settings.

Career options

Graduates will be able to practice in Ireland and will be able to register in other parts of the world. Additionally, they will be able to work in a wide range of settings including clinical and public health settings, hospital and private practices, food service management, and the food industry. Graduates may be eligible to advance toward further graduate research, leading to potential career options in academic and research institutions.

Admission requirements

  • The standard minimum entry requirement is an undergraduate honors degree (NFQ Level 8) or a graduate degree (NFQ Level 9) that include units or modules in Biochemistry and Human Physiology as part of the primary or postgraduate degree or other relevant degree from a recognized University .
  • For international candidates, the foreign equivalent is required. In addition, an officially translated degree will be required.
  • IELTS 8.0, with no less than 7 in any component (or its internationally recognized equivalent).
