The Master of Business (Economics and Finance Stream) is a challenging one-year taught program intended to prepare graduates for a career in finance or economics. The course was developed in response to demand from financial services firms for specialist graduates with advanced skills and knowledge in areas such as econometrics, financial derivatives, data analysis, and advanced financial analysis and interpretation. The course was developed in collaboration with companies in the sector with the aim of producing high-quality graduates with quantitative and analytical skills who have the ability to work in specialized roles in economics and finance.

Program delivery includes lectures, workshops by leading financial experts, a dedicated seminar program on topics related to finance and economics, and visits to financial services companies. Additional practice-based training is provided in key skill areas such as econometrics, derivatives, analysis, and corporate financial interpretation. Students receive specialized training in quantitative financial methods, business simulation, and monetary economics and use the full range of financial software that is available to students within the School of Business, including Thomson One Banker, StockTrak, and Financial Times.

The program will provide you with a challenging experience; Help expand your knowledge and skills while developing new mindsets and attitudes to prepare for the demands of the business environment. The MBS program provides students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of specialized subjects, experience innovative learning methods, and explore opportunities that arise from innovation, entrepreneurship, and business development.

Likewise, the program allows rational and reflective observation across the spectrum of topics, scrutinizing and appreciating the norms and interrelationships in business. In addition, you will acquire both standard and specialized research competencies during the duration of the program that will enhance your independent learning and organizational skills.

Course objectives

The course aims to equip graduates with modern tools for effective decision making and provide them with the ability to evaluate their decisions in the context of complex institutional settings.

The specific targets are:

  • To equip students with an advanced level of knowledge of theories, models, and practice in their subject specialization, along with an understanding of how each fits into the larger business environment.
  • Foster a learning environment that encourages the personal and professional development of students in an interdisciplinary format.
  • Develop high levels of research competence through the completion of a thesis project in a chosen area.
  • Focus on an exploration of the interrelationships between business functions using case studies with a view to documenting best practices.
  • Facilitate the transition from college to the world of work.

Please note: In semester 3, students will complete a thesis or applied business project of the 3 research papers.

Career opportunities

The course addresses a clear need for graduates trained in the application of specialized financial techniques, including econometrics and data analysis techniques. The program provides graduates with practical and quantitative skills in financial analysis, corporate financial interpretation, financial derivatives, and risk management. The learning and assessment approach is well informed by the industry with leading financial services companies participating in the implementation of the program. The MBS (Economics and Finance Stream) is closely linked with the AIB Center for Financial and Business Research. The Center provides updates to students on current ideas, thinking, and employment opportunities in the financial services industry. WIT also has a well-established Career Center and website that provides support and advice to students.

In our recent graduate employment survey, 85% of graduates are now employed in positions such as investment banking, corporate banking, trading / trading, portfolio management , asset prices, treasury, capital markets (stocks, money, bonds, currency and derivatives markets), risk management and financial analysis. There is a growing demand from a group of financial services companies in the South East for finance and economics graduates and the relevance and transferability of the skills developed in the program ensures that graduates are in demand from companies outside the region such as Barclays Capital (London ), Accenture (London), UBS (London).

A graduate may also apply for more Level 10 postgraduate studies, such as a PhD from Research in WIT or other third-level institutions, either nationally or internationally.

Admission requirements

  • An H1 or 2.1 overall award in a strong business / economics and finance undergraduate degree or a general business undergraduate degree with a / specialization in economics and / or finance.
  • Students of a non-business degree (for example, a bachelor’s or bachelor’s degree) but with relevant modules related to economics may also be eligible / finance.
  • Graduates who have earned a 2nd class honors grade 2 in the degrees listed above and who can demonstrate a high level of proficiency may be considered. performance in matters related to economics / finance.
