BSc (with Honors) in Bioveterinary Science
Key Points
Bioveterinary science is dedicated to investigating life processes and exploring the interrelationships of living organisms. This can involve studies at a variety of levels, from molecules to populations. Bioveterinary science is divided into many specialties such as biology, biological sciences, life sciences, and animal sciences. This degree emphasizes specific technologies, interactions, and / or systems (eg, animal behavior, biochemistry, biotechnology) or the environments in which living organisms inhabit (eg, ecology, environmental biology).
This degree program in Bioveterinary Sciences at AIT was the first of its kind in Ireland. It is a multidisciplinary degree program in science that allows the graduate to access a wide range of career options. All of this is designed to produce bioveterinary scientists who play an important role in the national promotion of animal and human health and welfare. Bioveterinary scientists can advance to positions in the pharmaceutical, agricultural and medical research sectors.
Y4 students in the program also have the opportunity to participate in one of the Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Network’s annual regional conferences.
Another reason for choosing this program is that in 2019 AIT was awarded the Institute of Technology of the Year in The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Graduates are well positioned to work in veterinary diagnostics and pharmaceutical research, veterinary, medical and nutritional sales, hospital work, and forensic laboratories.
As a graduate, you will be academically well prepared to enroll in a research degree program at AIT or other third-level institutes. This Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Bioveterinary Sciences qualifies graduates to advance to a variety of discipline-relevant level 9 and 10 research programs, including a master’s degree, a master of science degree, or a doctorate.

Admission requirements
Students applying to enter undergraduate or graduate programs must provide the following information directly to the International Office, Athlone Institute of Technology on or before May 1 for programs beginning in September:
- Complete AIT application form
- Detailed CV
- Certified transcripts of test results and English translations of grades not issued in English
- Evidence of ability to follow classes in the English language (which must satisfy the entrance requirements to the Institute for the following programs)
- Basic level program: Certificate in English for studies
- : Minimum IELTS 4.5 or equivalent
- Pre-session summer program in English from June to August: minimum IELTS 5.0 or equivalent
- Undergraduate programs: Minimum IELTS 5.5 without Band less than 5.0
- Postgraduate programs: Minimum IELTS 6.0 without Band less than 5.5 *
Academic
* Please note that some graduate programs require a minimum of IELTS 6.5
- Letter of recommendation from the corresponding department head of the institution itself
- Any other relevant information about qualifications or previous work experience
For this program:
- Grade H5 at a higher level in two subjects, plus Grade O6 / H7 in four other subjects on the Leaving Certificate. Two of these subjects must be mathematics and one language (English or Irish)
- QQI: Any major QQI award with three distinctions and a pass at C20139 or 5N1833 or C20174 or C2017 or Leaving Certificate Maths at O6 / H7
