The innovative MSc Fashion Buying & amp; TU Dublin Management is to date the only program of its kind offered in the Republic of Ireland. This one-year, full-time program is designed for graduates looking to break away from the fast-paced and exciting fashion shopping industry.

Career opportunities

Students will be able to understand and appreciate the diversity of fabrics available for use in the construction of their product / garment, their general properties, and the variations in the methods of assembling them into products.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles of rank and merchandising in the context of general category management and relate them to the general business of the retailer.

Students will understand how purchasing and merchandising interact with the other key business functions, in particular: design, apparel technology, marketing, finance, and retail operations.

Students will demonstrate specialized knowledge of the range of concepts, models, and processes relevant to the study of fashion purchasing and management.

Students will develop a comprehensive awareness of the important concepts and processes of consumer behavior.

Students will exercise the ability to review secondary research material, interpret multiple arguments on the topic, followed by the ability to present critical logical explanations.

Students will take responsibility for their own learning and actively participate in team- and group-based opportunities to develop leadership and initiative.

Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the nature of fashion distribution channels and the changing balance of power within them.

Students will be able to analyze the nature and power of brands in building fashion brand value and appreciate the particular case of luxury brands.

Students will develop an understanding of the key media involved in the fashion industry and the ability to describe media in relation to types, styles, power, and influence.

Program structure

The first semester introduces participants to the principles of fashion shopping I. Materials and Fabrics, Fashion Sociology, Finance for Nonfinancial Managers, and Luxury Brand Marketing and Retail Merchandise Analysis.

In the second semester, students study a more specialized area with Fashion Buying II, supplemented by modules such as Store Environment, Fashion Public Relations and Communication, Retail Operations Management, and International Fashion Retail.

Throughout the year a series of Fashion Seminars will be given. These seminars will allow students to interact with key industry figures and stay informed of the latest developments in the industry. International travel will also be an important feature of the program.

The first trip to Paris is in February. The purpose of this trip is primarily to attend the Premiere Vision fabric fair and experience first-hand the demands of the garment industry. The learning outcomes of this journey are examined through continuous evaluation.

Later in the semester, students travel to an Irish and UK based fabric factory with the National Tailoring Academy, which teaches the Materials and Fabrics module during the first semester.

Admission requirements

Applicants will require a baccalaureate degree officially translated into English.

Suitability test and interview.

The program is intended for bachelor honors graduates (minimum 2.2 honors) from colleges or similar third level institutions who have a strong desire to succeed in the fashion industry. Holders of equivalent professional qualifications will also be considered by examination.

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language as detailed on our website. Applicants for this program must have a minimum IELTS English proficiency (academic version) of 6.5 overall (or equivalent) with no less than 6 in each component.
