These machines we use every day are examples of mechatronics engineering, the science of combining mechanical engineering, electronic and computer engineering, and software design to create intelligent machines. Mechatronics engineering skills are key in the growing presence of a connected world (Internet of Things (IoT)) that enables machines to interact with physical and virtual (software) (electromechanical) worlds via the Internet. The potential in this area is immense no matter what your interest is, from designing safer cars to building smart, labor-saving robots and interconnecting the mechanical and electronic parts of future renewable energy systems.

Program description

This four-year BEng (honors) degree with the option to do a fifth-year integrated master’s degree (the decision to choose the fifth-year option is made after the second year and is subject to achieving an H2.2 or higher in Years 1 and 2) has 8 academic topics that address a particular aspect of mechatronics engineering. The degree begins with fundamental scientific principles and leads to a set of modules dealing with the design, analysis, fabrication and modeling of electromechanical products and systems.

The undergraduate program focuses on eight core areas:

  • Basic science and mathematics: Since the roots of mechatronics engineering are in science and mathematics, you will take courses in basic science and mathematics from engineering.
  • Electronic Circuit and System Design – Electronic components and systems are explored through electronic modules, as well as modules in analog circuits and systems, and digital.
  • Mechanical Systems Design and Analysis – Materials Engineering, Fundamentals of Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Machine Mechanics provide a basis for design and analysis of mechanical components and systems.
  • Software: Software design and analysis are integral parts of mechatronics engineering. Modules presenting general software development techniques are given in the first and second years, with a focus on embedded systems in the second year. You will also learn about specific software tools through modules and projects.
  • Mechatronic / Electromechanical System Design – A key emphasis of this program is to unite the disciplines of mechanical engineering and electronic engineering. Modules such as the first year project, the third year group project, and the fourth year project are designed to develop mechatronics skills and awareness. In addition, another fundamental area of ​​mechatronics engineering is the design of electromechanical systems, systems that consist of electrical and mechanical elements. A substantial part of the last year of the course is dedicated to the design, simulation, analysis and control of these systems. The Mobile Robotics module is completely project-based and embodies the key principles of mechatronics engineering.
  • Automated Manufacturing – Another core area of ​​mechatronics engineering is the use of electronics, embedded systems, and software in manufacturing and assembly automation . In year four, significant emphasis is placed on autonomous technology and manufacturing automation.
  • Project-Based Learning: You will complete multiple projects over the four years, culminating in a major individual project in year four. All projects must be based on at least two of the three core mechatronic elements (namely mechanical, electronic and software design components).
  • Experiential learning: In the third year, you will undertake an industrial job for six months (called INTRA). This is usually with a company in Ireland, but overseas opportunities may arise and there are also some research positions within DCU.

Admission requirements

  • As a general requirement, a Bachelor’s Degree / Baccalaureate Diploma / General Baccalaureate / Professional Degree from a recognized university with, minimum, is required a subject in mathematics.
  • For international candidates, the foreign equivalent is required. In addition, an officially translated degree will be required.
  • IELTS 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any component (or its internationally recognized equivalent).
