The University of Limerick School of Architecture offers a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree. The aim of the school is to educate architects with a strong, integrated, balanced skill set that grants a clear understanding of the environment (built, existing, and imaginary) vital to professional practice. The Royal Irish Institute of Architects (RIAI) has granted full accreditation to UL’s architecture program. Studying architecture in an accredited program is the first step to becoming a registered professional architect.

Program description

This program provides an architect training by offering a course syllabus structured around the study of design. The design studio is a creative laboratory where learning is developed through experimentation and reflection. Woven into the design studio will be study courses in structures (structural engineering), environmental science (environmental engineering), history (of architecture, society, technology), and philosophy, sociology, law, and management (professional practice).

Program structure

The course is designed to equip you with a wide range of skills fundamental to becoming an architect. These skills include hand drawing, sketching, modeling, photography, computer-aided drawing, audiovisual and verbal presentation, as well as basic skills including conceptualization and design, problem solving, and working with others.

Admission requirements

  • The standard minimum entry requirement is a 2.2 honors degree (NFQ Level 8) in Architecture. Applicants must possess at the time of enrollment the established Certificate of Completion (or an approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects that must include: two degrees H5 (upper level) and four O6 grades (ordinary level) or four H7 grades (upper level). In addition, we will consider relevant work experience and equivalent qualifications in related fields.
  • For international candidates, the foreign equivalent is required. In addition, an officially translated degree will be required.
  • IELTS 6.5, with no less than 6 in any component (or its internationally recognized equivalent).
