The program, which comprises teaching and research components, is modular and structured in three semesters. The taught component of the program (semesters 1 and 2) consists of five required modules in each semester.

The important characteristics of the master’s program are the balance of theory and practice, and technological competence and musical creativity. The core of the program is hands-on training at computer music workstations, where students are exposed to music composition, sound synthesis and manipulation, computer programming and development, and music production.

Delivery of the Program

This course is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, labs, tutorials and independent reading, continuous assessment projects, etc. It is delivered full-time for 3 semesters in 1 year (including summer) while the part-time mode of delivery takes place for 2 years.

After successfully completing the taught component, the student pursues a major research project, the Master’s Project, under the supervision of one of the course tutors. The path chosen by the student will strongly influence the focus (artistic or scientific / technological) of the research component, which in turn will determine the award title of Master of Arts in Music Technology or Master of Science in Music Technology. Projects are typically in one of the following areas: music software development, composition portfolio, or dissertation.

Admission requirements

  • The standard minimum entry requirement is to have a knowledge of audio production and a passion for music technology is also required, or to have a Level 7 or 8 qualification in the area. Applicants must submit an approved portfolio of relevant digital audiovisual works. Graduates from other creative disciplines will be assessed for entry through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on a case-by-case basis.
  • For mature applicants (over 23 at the time of application), relevant industry or related experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • For international students, an official degree translated into English will be required.
  • IELTS 6.5 (or its internationally recognized equivalent).
