This program is at the highest level of European mastery. It offers advanced level courses in the theory, analysis, design and modeling of electronic and computer technology in an up-to-date and industry-relevant modern program.

Program description

This program that focuses on the Internet of Things [IoT] and leads to a final award of Master of Electronics and Information Technology, which aims to provide a path for graduates Bachelor’s degrees (e.g. BE / BTech / BSc / BEng), existing ICT professionals, and those wishing to convert from partner disciplines, to acquire the skills necessary to pursue careers in the domain of IoT applications and technology.

Internet of Things [IoT] is a computing concept that describes the interconnection and collaboration of a wide variety of everyday physical objects connected via the Internet. The rapid development of IoT has been driven by ongoing research and technological advancements (especially in 5G mobile communications and artificial intelligence). IoT technologies are enabling a wide range of business opportunities in the context of “smart” homes, neighborhoods, and cities, and in exploiting smart infrastructure and services, in areas such as transportation, energy, and healthcare.

IoT systems involve the convergence of multiple technologies, existing and new, including sensors and actuators, low-power communication, networking and cloud, big data, and data analytics , machine learning, security, and application deployment and management.

There are two entries to the program, in February and September, and flexible study options are provided. Due to scheduling of project deadlines, full-time students starting in September can complete the program in 12 months, while full-time students starting in February can complete the program in 18 months.

The program offers advanced level courses in electronic and computer technology theory, analysis, design, and modeling in an up-to-date and industry-relevant modern program, targeting students:

  • Gain a systematic understanding of the theory, concepts and methods at the forefront of knowledge pertaining to selected topics chosen from a broad set within Engineering Electronics and Computing.
  • Build a critical awareness of the current state of the art and current developments and research at the forefront of IoT, along with a knowledge and understanding of specialized practice, methods and techniques in electronic and computer technology.
  • Develop the ability to identify, formulate, analyze and solve engineering problems and integrate knowledge, manage complexity and make judgments related to Technology problems Electronics and Computing.
  • Develop skills to design components, systems or processes to meet specific needs and knowledge and understanding of analysis and design processes and techniques and the ability to apply them in unfamiliar situations.
  • To allow more intensive exposure to industry-relevant modern technologies that comprise the Internet of Things.

Career options

Graduates will find opportunities in Irish and international high-tech industry positions, including:

  • Evangelist of technology
  • Head of Research, Development and Innovation (R + D + I)
  • Director of Management Information Systems
  • Computer science and information research scientist
  • IoT Systems Architect
  • Computer Systems Analyst
  • Application developer
  • System architects

Graduates of the school’s programs have been employed by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and many multinationals, such as Google, Intel, Texas Instruments, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Amazon.

The skills learned, however, are fundamental and can be applied to many other disciplines as well. In addition, the Master’s Project will also greatly enhance the graduate’s employment potential.
