Brewing is the process by which beer is produced. Distillation is the fermentation and purification process for the production of distilled spirits, including whiskey and brandy. Ireland’s brewing and brewing industry is experiencing rapid growth. Statistics include:

  • The growing Irish beer sector employs 2,000 people and supports thousands of farming families.
  • Direct employment in distillation will grow 30% by 2025.
  • Massive growth in microbreweries with 100 expected by 2025.
  • € 1 billion will be invested in the whiskey industry to increase market share by 300%.
  • 28 distilleries in operation or under development on the island of Ireland.

Successful brewing and distillation requires the application of scientific and engineering principles. This four-year course, which is Ireland’s first college degree in distilling and brewing, equips students with the scientific knowledge and instrumentation skills necessary to work in the brewing and still industry. Combined with modules in product development, marketing, and regulatory affairs, graduates will be perfectly qualified to work in these expanding industries. The course incorporates an industry job position in year 3 and a research project in year 4.

Special features

This is the first course of its kind in Ireland specifically designed to meet the demands of a growing industry.

  • Professional Recognition – Successful completion of this course allows for exemption from the Distillation and Brewing Diploma level exams to render the Institute of Brewing and Distillation (IBD) Institute of Brewing and Distillation Master’s level professional qualifications.
  • Industry-based work practices.
  • Access to brewing and distillation facilities as part of the course.
  • Collaboration with the industry.

Career outlook

Graduates will be experts in brewing and distillation and will gain employment in a variety of roles in the brewing and distilling industries, including production, laboratory and technical work, quality control, or product development, in large or small-scale breweries or distilleries. Graduates can even start their own business. The skills can be used globally, so there are endless international opportunities.
