The International Foundation’s program in Engineering and IT provides academic preparation for entry into the first year of undergraduate studies and ensures that you meet the academic English language requirements for your chosen degree program.

Prepare for your postgraduate program at one of Ireland’s leading institutes of higher education. Those who successfully complete this course will have the opportunity to progress to degree programs at the Institutes of Technology or Universities in Ireland.

Program structure

The objective of this module is to provide students with mathematical knowledge and skills that enable them to formulate and solve simple mathematical models used in science, engineering, and business. Use standard functions to model simple situations in science, engineering, and business where two variables are related.

Develop an understanding of statistics and probability; Solve simple problems involving chance using basic probability and counting techniques and also learning to interpret these results.

The purpose of this award is to equip the student with the knowledge, skill, and competence to effectively participate in research and present learning for formal academic and other purposes.

The purpose of this award is to equip the student with the knowledge, ability and competence to compile, present, interpret and analyze statistical data, with some theoretical understanding of basic statistical concepts.

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Understand basic statistical principles, including sampling, summary statistics, and the nature of variables.
  • Understand and apply a variety of common statistical methods (frequency distributions, index numbers, correlation, and regression) when analyzing a variety of data.
  • Evaluate statistical results and use statistics to make predictions.
  • Provide a focus on connecting statistical theory with the implementation of such theory with respect to real-world problems that can be encountered in the fields of business and engineering.
  • Independently evaluate a data set, decide which statistical tests are appropriate, perform those tests, and interpret and comment on the results in the framework of an evaluation that emulates a real-world application.

The purpose of this award is to equip the student with the knowledge, skill, and competence to appreciate structures and changes in subject matter. It is designed to develop an understanding of the everyday and industrial applications of chemistry.

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Gain an appreciation for the central role of chemistry in modern life.

  • Provide a clear understanding of the reasoning behind scientific models used in the field of chemistry.
  • Raise awareness of the many practical applications of chemistry.

This module is designed to be an introduction to the fundamental principles of the physical world. The award will equip the student with the knowledge, skill, and competence to apply the principles of physics to everyday experiences and industrial processes.

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Understand the application of theory and practice to the following areas.
  • Understand and apply important definitions, laws, facts and formulas in Physics with reference to:
  • Measure, investigate, or determine different physical quantities in required experiments that focus on methods, mathematics, and precision with reference to:
  • Mechanics and heat
  • Light and sound
  • Electromagnetism
  • Atomic Physics (including Bohr Atom)
  • Solve a simple physical model applied to a variety of real-life situations.

Exam – Theory 40% Credit Value: 15 FET

The purpose of this award is to equip the student with the knowledge, skill and competence to use a word processing application to produce documents in a variety of contexts with a mailing or publishable standard while working autonomously and under a general direction.

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate good file management technique, creating folders, naming, and saving documents in relevant folders.
  • Create, analyze and print documents using different formats and layouts.
  • Improve document creation by using clip art, file images, and inserting tables.
  • Prepare data sources for mail merge, form letters, envelope labels, and letters using the mail merge functions.
  • Complete a practical exam and homework outside of class obtaining an overall grade of 50% or higher.

The aim of the award is to equip the student with the knowledge, skill and competence to use the Internet for communication, research, collaboration, e-commerce and web creation in a secure and confidential way in a variety of personal and work contexts.

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Describe the latest trends in the use of communication technologies, security, collaborative technologies, electronic commerce and file exchange.
  • Design, publish and maintain a simple website / web page.
  • Produce searchable documents on related topics downloaded and stored in an organized sequence.
  • Demonstrate email techniques by sending email with attachments and emails received in relevant folders.
  • Understand business software and recommend proper methods for connecting to the Internet.

Admission requirements

Successfully passed all subjects on the certificate of completion / high school exams with an overall high school minimum of 60% / minimum GPA of 3.0 / 5.0.

Pass math in high school final exams.

English language requirements

Minimum English language requirements of B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), or IELTS 5.0, or equivalent. (must be an internationally recognized exam within the last 2 years).
