The School of Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and Engineering has as main objective of offering you the skills to bring projects from design to reality. The course will teach you how to adapt to technological change in a competitive industrial climate.

Program description

The main objective of the course is to develop the skills to carry out projects in progress. It will provide you with a broad-based managerial and technological education so that you will be able to recognize, evaluate and solve construction problems and commercial associated with construction and civil engineering projects.

Program structure

In the first year of the program, you will be provided a foundation in math and science, and an introduction to materials, design, building technology, economics, and graphic communication skills. . You will develop key skills in writing, data analysis, project planning and Building Information Modeling (BIM).

You will develop modules in Construction Technology and CAD. The study of Structural Mechanics gives you a foundation for the later module in structural design. The first Building Services module will teach you how to provide sustainable building services. You will also learn about surveying, which is an important tool for controlling measurements in construction. A module in the Employee Regulation offers insight into personnel management skills.

In the third year, the modules in Building Production and Construction and Construction Regulations will teach you a variety of skills that will prove useful during your CoOp placement the following semester. The Structural Design module gives you an understanding of design and involves you in material selection and calculations. The second semester of Year 3 and the Summer Term CoOp experience will allow you the opportunity to practice some or all of the key skills you have learned and will help you develop a summary for your end of the year project.

With you will complete the set of building technology and construction services modules. The Procurement and Contracting module, Financial Accounting teaches you the key elements necessary for project / business financial control. A Project Planning and Control module gathers all the aspects of the course so that all the elements of management of projects under construction are understood.

The senior project for the last two semesters will encourage you in self-directed learning, and in identifying and solving a complex construction-related problem. For many students, the initiative for their project arises during internships; for others, it is a subject that they are passionate about.

Admission requirements

  • Applicants must possess at the time of registration the established Certificate of Completion (or an approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects that must include: two grades H5 (upper level) and four grades O6 (ordinary level) or four grades H7 (upper level) Level) degrees. Subjects must include math, Irish or other language, and English.
  • For international candidates, the foreign equivalent is required. In addition, an official degree translated into English will be required.
  • IELTS 6.5, with no less than 6 in any component (or its internationally recognized equivalent).
